Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds: The Truth Every Buyer Should Know
Share
When you're shopping for a diamond, you'll encounter a choice that didn't exist a generation ago: lab-grown or mined? It's a question that matters — not just for your wallet, but for the planet.
Here's everything you need to know to make the right decision.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. Not a simulant. Not a fake. It has the same chemical composition (pure carbon), the same crystal structure, the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and the same optical properties as a diamond pulled from the earth.
The only difference is where it was created — and how long it took. Mined diamonds form over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure deep within the earth. Lab-grown diamonds replicate that process in weeks, using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technology.
Can You Tell the Difference?
No — and neither can a jeweller with the naked eye. Even trained gemologists require specialised equipment to distinguish between lab-grown and mined diamonds. They are, for all practical purposes, identical.
The Price Difference
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50-80% less than their mined equivalents of the same quality. This means you can choose a significantly larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget — or simply spend less without compromising on beauty.
The Environmental Difference
Diamond mining is one of the most environmentally disruptive industries on earth. A single carat of mined diamond requires moving approximately 250 tonnes of earth, consuming vast amounts of water and energy, and leaving permanent scars on landscapes.
Lab-grown diamonds require a fraction of that impact. While they do consume energy, many producers are moving toward renewable energy sources — making lab-grown diamonds an increasingly sustainable choice.
Certification: What to Look For
Whether you choose lab-grown or mined, always look for independent certification. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) both certify lab-grown diamonds, grading them on the same 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity, and carat — as mined stones.
At SM, every lab-grown diamond piece comes with IGI certification, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Which Should You Choose?
If you value maximum brilliance for your budget, ethical sourcing, and environmental responsibility — lab-grown is the clear choice. If provenance and the romance of a stone formed over billions of years matters to you — mined diamonds have their own story to tell.
Either way, the most important thing is that your diamond is certified, beautiful, and chosen with intention.
